While we constantly encourage visitors, the library was a bit surprised at our newest visitors. A flock of flamingos. Wonder if they need directions to warmer weather? Hope our cold temperatures don’t cause their feathers to sag. Check out our pictures of the new arrivals.

Changes for the Library’s e-Book Collection

Yesterday, Penguin Group announced it has ceased offering e-books for purchase via Overdrive. Overdrive is the primary supplier of e-books to public libraries and is how the Peru Library is able to provide e-books to our patrons. Penguin is the latest major American publisher (Hachette, HarperCollins, MacMillian, Penguin Group and Simon & Schuster) to restrict purchase of e-books by libraries for patron borrowing, Penguin Severs Ties with OverDrive.

Only one of the major publishers, Random House, continues to allowing unrestricted loans for e-books purchased by libraries. (HarperCollins restricts eBooks to 26 loans for libraries.)

For now, this means the Peru Public Library will not be able to purchase e-books of authors such as Robert Crais, Nevada Barr, Laurell K. Hamilton, Jayne Ann Krentz, Daniel Silva among others for our e-book collection. Please bear with us as we seek access and resolution to this situation with Penguin and other publishers.

Friends Book Sale Room

A sampling of current titles include Action Hero’s Handbook, to help you out-do Indiana Jones; Orchids as House Plants, for this flowerless season; the Clam Lake Papers: a winter in the North Woods; Get a Life: 113 ways to make more time for what’s really important; and How to Build a Low-cost Laser (to help you keep up with Indiana Jones!) Plus books by your favorite authors.

Come check out what the Friends have for you. The Friends sale room is just inside the library’s lobby, on the main floor, by the drinking fountain.

One on One Computer Lessons for the Beginner

One On One Computer Lessons for the Beginner, provides individual instruction for learning to use the mouse, keyboard, create documents and other basics. Bring your own laptop or one of the library computers. The one-time, one-hour class available on Tuesdays in January (17, 24, & 31) at 1:00 p.m. or Wednesdays, January 11, 18, 25, and February 1 at 10:00 a.m. Registration is required. Call (815-223-0229) or stop in the library to register. This free class is limited to Peru Library cardholders.

Rally Round the Flag: the impact of the Civil War on the Illinois Valley

On January 17th, the library presents Ron Bluemer talking about his new book on the experiences of La Salle County volunteers in the Civil War. Ron’s book, Rally Round the Flag, is based on the letters of local soldiers, detailing camp life, battles and the hardships of war in the 19th century. Ron’s presentation begins at 6:00 p.m., so come early for a seat. No registration necessary.

Received a Kindle or Nook as a gift? You can download ebooks from the Peru Public Library from our OMNI group’s ebook collection to your new ereader. Go to www.omnilibraries.org, to find and borrow an ebook or eaudiobook, download either Overdrive Media Console or Adobe Digital Editions (depending on the ereader you have), then download the book to your reader. You are ready to go.
