Library Hours Expand, Open at 9 a.m.

The library will open at 9 a.m. beginning May 1st.The change was adopted by library board action at their March 2012 meeting. Jean Carter, Board President, said “The library is delighted we can financially support this increase in service to Peru residents. We know how many patrons stop by the library in the morning, only to be disappointed the library hasn’t yet opened. But not any longer.”

The change impacts the library’s opening time each day the library is regularly open, Monday through Saturday. The library’s hours are now 9 a.m. – 8 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

The Way We Worked

The Way We Worked is a Smithsonian exhibit currently in La Salle County. The Way We Worked explores how work became a central element in American culture. The exhibit, at the Ottawa Historical and Scouting Heritage Museum, is also highlighted in a series of programs and displays in the area.

The Peru Public Library is hosting the Way Peru Worked, a display of library artifacts from area businesses. Stop by to see photos and other memorabilia from where we worked in Peru.

You Belong @ your library – National Library Week

You always belong @ your library – browsing our new fiction books, selecting a dvd for home, using one of our 14 public computers or our wifi, reading a magazine, or using a database from home. You belong.

During national library week (8th – 14th) the library is hosting a day-long open house in honor of you, our patrons. So stop by on Wednesday (April 11th) from 10 until 8 p.m. for a cookie and glass of punch.

Tax Day Coming

Teen Bake Sale

The Library’s Teens are holding their annual Bake Sale on Saturday the 31st of March from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Stop by to purchase your favorite baked goodie.

The teens use the Bake Sale funds to help support teen programs at the library.

Adult Book Discussion Group

With research papers being assigned the library can help you. We have access to online databases with thousands of newspaper and magazine full-text articles to assist your research. Peru patrons have access to these online databases from home or the library, making life easier.

Need newspaper articles? The library’s electronic access to America’s News includes the News Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times, USAToday and more, all with a quick search.

Or prefer magazine articles on your topic? Try our Wilson Web as a gateway to the magazine articles you need. Wilson Web magazines range from history (History Today) to business (Best’s Review) to teaching (Teacher Educator) and everything in between (Baby Talk and Harper’s).

1940 Census Available Soon from National Archives

On April 2, 2012 the National Archives will release access to the 1940 Federal Census. This census, accessible online free of charge from the National Archive at http://www.1940census.archives.gov/, does not have a name index. But no fears, if you know where someone lived in 1940, you can search the 1940 Census enumeration district (ED) maps for an address and then locate the ED number for that address.

The National Archives have uploaded the 1940 Census maps to their Archival Research Catalog (ARC) and plan to add them to the new Online Public Access system before April 2nd. To search the maps go to ARC at http://www.archives.gov/research/arc/
