- AllTheWeb
- AllTheWeb (also known as FAST Search) has one of the largest indexes of
the web and offers large multimedia and mobile/wireless web indexes,
available from its site. AllTheWeb's strengths include, it's big, fast, and
search-focused; no stop words; database frequently refreshed; and
customization.
- AltaVista
- Offering compact or detailed searches through what the company claims is
the most comprehensive Web index, Alta Vista can help you find your way
through billions of words filling millions of Web pages. Alta Vista's
strengths include large database; powerful search features; International
coverage, interfaces, and foreign language handling.
- Ask Jeeves
- Employs multiple technologies which first searches a base of questions and
answers compiled by human editors that are displayed in question format; and
second uses Teoma's "sophisticated algorithms and subject-specific
popularity data to generate the most relevant and authoritative results on
the Web."
- Dogpile
- "Dogpile searches four search engines at a time. If you do not get at
least 10 documents matching your query, Dogpile will automatically search
the next four engines, and so, on until all are searched or 10 matches are
found." Draws search results from AltaVista, Direct Hit, LookSmart,
Open Directory, WiseNut and Yahoo! among others.
- Google
- Has a characteristic ad-free page that uses a system for ranking web pages
from over 2 billion of its indexed URLs. "Google only produces results
that match all of your search terms." Google's strengths include, the
large number of indexed pages that include PDF, DOC, PS, and many other file
types; relevance based on sites' linkages and authority; cached archive; and
it can search most stop words.

users. Librarians annotate and evaluate listings for their information
potential.
- Lycos

shopping center." Its strengths include, additional access point to the
Fast database; some advanced features; and extensive portal content.
- Yahoo
- Arguably the pioneer Internet guide, Yahoo! has been organizing Web
content since what seems like the beginning of it all. Updated daily, Yahoo!
allows users to browse and search subject categories. Yahoo! also has
up-to-the-minute sports scores, weather, headlines, maps, yellow pages and
stock quotes. Yahoo's strengths include its popularity as a best known
website, one of the larger directory databases, and many services are good
for popular and general information.
